Why Recycle

Picture of Landfill SiteIn Rutland we produce 20,000 tonnes of waste a year, most of this waste is disposed of in landfill sites where it is buried in the ground and can take
hundreds of years to decompose.

Not only are we rapidly running out of space and facilities to landfill all our rubbish; burying it in the ground has a negative impact on the environment. As the buried
rubbish decomposes, it produces carbon dioxide and methane which are both
greenhouse gases that are contributing to climate change.

By recycling we can reduce the amount of waste that we have to dispose which means fewer landfill sites and a reduction in the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.

Recycling not only reduces the amount of rubbish we bury in landfill sties, it also makes better use of resources and raw materials.

Recycling uses less energy to produce goods than if they have been manufactured from virgin materials and also saves resources by reducing the need for raw materials.

Most of the every day products we use can be recycled into something else, materials such as glass and aluminium can be recycled over and over again without loosing any of their properties.
