You can put a lot more than just your grass and garden waste in a composter. Not many people know that you can also compost tea bags and coffee grounds.' The national week is organised by 'The Compost Association'. They are the United Kingdom's not for profit membership organisation, promoting the sustainable management of biodegradable resources. They actively promote the use of biological treatment techniques and encourage good management practices throughout the industry. By advocating a suitable regulatory and economic framework, the Association works to ensure the long-term sustainability of the biological treatment industry. George Chase’s top tips for composting are: * Put your composter in the garden on bare soil, not paving or decking. It should be somewhere that is easy to get too all year round. * The secret to good compost is getting the right mix of ingredients. Try to establish a high carbon to nitrogen ratio. Dried flowers, chopped woody stems, bracken and cardboard are very high in carbon, whereas grass cuttings and kitchen waste are high in nitrogen. * Composting works best if you add a lot of materials at once. * Your compost is ready to use when it resembles dark soil and has a sweet, earthy smell. This can take anywhere from 6-24 months. For more information about Composting Week in Rutland please contact 01572 722 577 | ||
