NEW Recycling Collections

Published:Wednesday 26 March 2008

Recycling LogoBy Friday 28 March, every household in Rutland should have received information (and new grey and black wheeled bins) about the new refuse and recycling service being introduced on Monday 31 March.

From 31 March, every household in the county (except those who will be using sacks or communal bins) will receive recycling, garden waste and refuse collections from the kerbside.

Councillor Janine Rodger says: 'We've been a long-time getting ready for this point, and the delivery of the new wheeled bins has been a huge success. Every household in the county will have received their new bins by the end of this week and should start using them after their normal collection this week. Remember to check your collection calendar to find out whether you're receiving a recycling or refuse collection first, and then simply put either your grey and green or black bin out accordingly'.

Councillor Rodger added, 'It's important that people make sure that they put the correct materials in the right bin. Grey is for recycling, green for garden waste and black for landfill. Please don’t overfill your bin and remember that those with lids left open will not be collected. If you're still unsure about the new collection system please read the information booklet delivered with your new bins or visit our dedicated website at www.recycle4rutland.org.uk which is packed full of useful information'.

Once the new system starts next week (Monday 31 March 08), residents should automatically start using the new black bin for landfill waste, the new grey bin for recycling and the existing green bin will transfer use to a garden waste bin.

Those residents who are currently on the trial recycling scheme in Oakham South East will have received two new bins this week (a black landfill bin, the same size as in the rest of the county, and a grey recycling bin). Residents in this area will continue to use their green bins for garden waste.

The smaller black bins (currently used for landfill) will be collected from homes on Thursday 27th March; this was outlined in a letter sent to all 1100 households in the trial area.

To help residents fully understand the new system, Rutland County Council is publishing a number of key points:
  • GREY bin is for recycling, GREEN for garden waste and BLACK for landfill
  • Items that can be recycled are paper, cardboard, glass, plastic bottles, tins and cans
  • Place all recycling loose in the GREY recycling bin (please do not bag it up)
  • Remember to put your bin out by 7am on your collection day which may have changed
  • Do not overfill your bin, bins with lids not fully closed will not be emptied.
  • Read your information booklet and collection calendar carefully – it tells you everything you need to know about the new refuse and recycling collection scheme
  • If you have not received your new grey and black bins by the close of play on Friday 28 March, then get in touch with Rutland County Council as you may have been missed out. Please be aware that deliveries are still taking place on Friday 28th.
