Bank Holiday Bin Collections

Published:Tuesday 29 April 2008

Recycling LogoRutland residents are being reminded that the new waste and recycling collections now continue as normal during a bank holiday week – and not a day later as under the previous collection system.

It means homes that have their rubbish or recycling/garden waste collected on a Monday will still have a collection on Monday 5 May as detailed on the collection calendar distributed with new bins last month.

Councillor Janine Rodger, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment, says 'This is one of the major improvements of the new service. Residents no longer have to remember to put their bin out a day later, collections during bank holiday weeks continue as normal on the day that people are used to'.

Councillor Rodger added, 'I'd like to take this opportunity to thank people for their understanding of the new scheme and co-operation during the first few weeks. Now that black and grey bin deliveries have taken place, our attention has now switched to bringing back in the green bins from those who home compost or do not produce garden waste. This could take a couple of weeks, but crews are working hard to get round the county as quickly as possible'.

Rutland County Council is also offering advice to residents who have too much recycling to fit into one bin.

Councillor Rodger commented, 'A number of residents have already said that they’re now generating so much recycling that it won’t all fit in the grey bin. My advice would be to make sure that everything is crushed or squeezed as much as possible. I found this certainly worked for me after struggling in the early weeks, but now I make sure that every can is crushed, every plastic bottle squeezed and all cardboard broken down'.
