Carry-a-bag campaign
Published:Friday 13 June 2008By working together traders and shoppers can establish Rutland as the first county in the country to be single-use carrier bag free. In order to understand the level of support for the Campaign and the willingness to change shopping behaviour, a survey will be carried out 18 to 20 June outside Tesco in Oakham. The Campaign organisers request that shoppers stop and give their opinions if they see the Carry-a-bag researchers. All Rutland retailers are being asked to support the Campaign by signing up to a progressive approach, building by stages: Stage 1 - Do Not Offer a single use bag. However, if customers request a bag, one can be provided. Stage 2 – Recommend A Durable Alternative. If customers request a bag - offer a durable alternative first. Stage 3 – Only Offer A Durable Alternative. The Campaign organisers hope to have all Rutland retailers operating to one of these stages by Rutland Day – September 13th. Rutland Day is also the target date to unveil the 'Rutland Bag'. It is hoped that Rutland retailers who are in support of the Campaign will offer this bag as a durable alternative. Part of the money raised from the sale of these bags will go to support Oakham In Bloom & Uppingham In Bloom. Tim Curtis, Managing Director said 'In our Lands' End Outlet Store we have noticed a 30% reduction in single use carrier bags, just by simply not offering them. If all Rutland retailers moved to the first stage in support of the Carry-a-bag campaign, this would remove a significant volume of unnecessary single use bags.' Mark Harris said 'We are working the Inspiro, a local supplier, on a durable Rutland Bag, many ideas have been discussed and the one currently being developed is a soft fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. More will be released about the bag once a final choice is made.' For more information please visit www.rutland.gov.uk/carryabag | ||
