COUNCIL THANKS RESIDENTS FOR RECYCLING TAKE-UP
Published:Thursday 6 November 2008It’s estimated that since the start of kerbside recycling collections in March 2008, Rutland’s recycling rate has nearly doubled, up from 29% (2007/08) to 54%. There is further good news with figures also showing that the amount of waste sent to landfill (which costs Rutland County Council and taxpayers £48.71 per tonne) has been reduced by around a third. Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services, Councillor Janine Rodger said: ‘This is a very encouraging start to the kerbside recycling scheme and the Council would like to thank residents for their co-operation and the magnificent performance to date. I’m sure that residents will continue to be pro-active in their separation of waste by recycling all materials that they can in their grey recycling bins and putting garden waste into their green bins.’ A widespread communication campaign took place earlier this year prior to the launch of the kerbside recycling collections to every household. www.recycle4rutland.org.uk was set up to provide residents with an online resource during the early stages of the new recycling scheme. Since being launched at the start of 2008, residents have visited the site over 23,000 times to find out more about recycling. A successful advertising campaign was also organised through the local media to inform residents of the new scheme and how it would operate. Residents are reminded that it is useful to flatten their recycling before putting it in the bin in order to recycle more. Residents are also being asked to be mindful of disabled and visually impaired people when leaving their wheelie bins out and to store their bins in a safe and convenient space for all. Many residents do already do this, and the council would like to thank them and encourage other residents to act as responsibly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone in the County. A leaflet regarding the Christmas collection arrangements will be sent out to residents during November. Residents can always keep up to date on recycling and refuse collections on this website. | ||
