Recycling Awards logoThanks to the hard work of our residents Rutland County Council have been selected as finalists for the National Recycling Awards 2009.

The Council has been nominated for the ‘Local Authority Target Success’ category, which highlights Councils who have made a significant difference to their recycling rates over the last year.
Since the kerbside recycling scheme was introduced in April 2008 and residents were provided with three separate wheeled bins for rubbish, recycling and garden waste the rate of recycling for the County has increased from 28.8% to an astounding estimated 52.9%*.

The Council put in place the kerbside recycling scheme in 2008, which has made a huge difference to recycling throughout the County resulting in the Council collecting an additional 2284* tonnes of recycling since the scheme was put in place. On top of this an estimated additional 2499* tonnes of garden waste has also been collected for composting, resulting in a total of 4783* tonnes of recyclable waste being collected, which would have otherwise gone to landfill.

Portfolio Holder for Regulatory Services, Councillor Janine Rodger said: “This award really should be dedicated to the hard work of our residents who have worked with us to put the system in place and make it run so well. By using the new kerbside recycling scheme, as well as visiting the CA sites to recycle residents really have helped us to make a difference to our recycling in the County. We can now proudly say that we are a greener County and the nomination for this award just shows how significant the change has been.”

The awards night will take place on Tuesday 27 October 2009 where the winners of the category will be announced.

Finalists for this year's Lets Recycle Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management have also been revealed ahead of next month's high-profile ceremony.

Portfolio Holder for Regulatory Services, Councillor Janine Rodger has been nominated for the Local authority recycling champion awards. Cllr Rodger has been selected as one of 3 finalists for providing the political leadership and momentum to drive through the council's new waste and recycling collection system.

More than 160 entries were received across nine categories this year, covering achievements and innovations across the local authority, business, retail and community sectors.

Cllr Rodger said: “I am delighted that I have been selected for this award, again it just highlights how much hard work that both our staff and our residents have put into the new scheme over the past year. I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and encourage people to continue recycling as much as possible, please do keep up the good work as it really is appreciated. Together we can make Rutland a greener place to live.”
