Rutland Highlighted as Top Recycler

Published:Friday 13 November 2009

Recycling collectionThe County's recycling rate has tipped the scales recently, making Rutland County Council the top Unitary Authority* in the country for recycling.

This is a fantastic achievement for the Council, who are now recognised as one of the top two most improved local authorities for recycling in the country.

The Council would like to thank residents for helping us to climb a staggering 252 places in the national local authority league table for recycling from 266th to 14th place.

Councillor Janine Rodger, who is responsible for waste and recycling said: “This really is brilliant news. We can now proudly say that we are one of the top 15 Council’s in the country for recycling out of 394 authorities. I would like to say thank you to all our residents, staff and contractors who have worked hard to improve the service to this high standard, increasing the recycling rate from 28% (2007/08) to 53% (2008/09). Since introducing the kerbside collection scheme in April 2008 our residents really have shown great commitment by recycling their waste and putting items in the correct bin. I hope that we can continue to work together to recycle as much as possible.”

Recent figures published nationally have shown that the amount of household waste recycled by local authorities in the last year has increased from 34.5 per cent in 2007/8 to 37.6 per cent, showing a continued improvement in recycling from just 11.2 per cent in 2000/2001. Waste sent to landfill in the last year decreased by 1.2 million tonnes compared to 2007/8.

The kerbside recycling scheme was introduced in April 2008 and provided residents with three separate wheeled bins for rubbish, recycling and garden waste.
